Colourful lily full sleeve from six angles

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Six photographs show the same arm from different angles, covered by a full sleeve of flowers and flowing abstract shapes. Large red and orange lilies sit near the shoulder, with blue and purple swirling lines, bubbles and paler petals running down towards the wrist. The bright, saturated colours blend into soft gradients, and the images are set against a plain black background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The furnace had been burning since before the bells of the Serapeum rang, and my master Theon would not let anyone touch the blowpipe until the glass was ready to tell him what it wanted to be. I was fourteen, sent to fetch the cullet and sweep the ash, and I had learned to read the colour of the gather the way my mother read bread. Orange meant hurry. Grey meant wait. The bruised violet that rose from the cobalt meant trouble.

That spring the steward of the Prefect ordered a hundred perfume flasks for a wedding, each one with lilies pulled from the molten skin of the glass. Theon swore it could be done in a fortnight. He cut rods of red and amber, dripped threads of blue through the clear, and dragged a bamboo needle through the swirl so the colours bled into one another like river water under a bridge. Every flask came out with bubbles caught in its walls, small suns trapped in the glass.

On the ninth night the batch cracked in the annealing oven, all but one. Theon sat on an upturned crate and laughed until he coughed. Keep that one, he said. The bubbles are the best part. Nobody buys perfectly clear air. I wrapped the flask in wool and hid it under my pallet, and I did not tell him how often I took it out after that.

I still have it. When the light comes slant through the window at dusk, the red lilies throw their colour across the wall and the blue threads turn to violet, and the bubbles hold the whole gold evening in their small round throats.
