Colourful paw prints with script on a shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
Three photos of the same tattoo on a shoulder and upper back show a trail of paw prints in blue, green, purple and orange, with the largest print at the right. Black script reading 'I'll meet you at the bridge' runs beneath the prints in a thin, handwritten style. The colour fills look soft and even, and the photos are taken in indoor light against a plain background.

Ada Pell found the prints on the back step at ten to four, while the flour was still cold in its sacks. They came up from the towpath in a neat line, small pads pressed into the frost, and they had no business being there, because Tobias had been gone since March and she had buried him under the damson tree herself.

The first ones were orange, the colour of the nasturtiums that had given up in October. Then they turned green, then a clear blue like the glaze on her grandmother's plates, and by the time the trail reached the gate they were a deep plum purple, large and round, pressed so hard into the rime that the grass showed through.
She followed them anyway, in her slippers, with the lamp from the bakery swinging. The trail ran past the allotments and the bins to the old iron footbridge over the Medway, where it stopped at the rail. There was no dog. There was only the mist lying on the water and the smell of her own bread drifting out from the open oven behind her.
She broke off the heel of the morning's loaf, still warm, and set it on the rail. Then she stood there until the sky went the colour of skimmed milk, feeling foolish and feeling something else entirely.
When she came back that afternoon the bread was gone, and the frost on the towpath had melted except for one last print, faint and orange, pointing across the bridge towards the far bank.
