Paw prints with name bones on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Several dark grey paw prints form a trail up the lower leg, with a larger paw print at the bottom. Four bone-shaped banners carry the names Reba, Caesar, Julia and Deegee in script lettering. The shading is soft grey with black outlines, and there is no colour ink visible.

The snow came over Harrow Fell on the Tuesday and did not stop until the Friday, and by then Agnes Pell had given up listening for carts. She kept the Drover's Rest alone at the top of the pass, with a fire, a kettle and a ledger of guests who had long since gone down into the valley. So when a grey bitch with a torn ear scratched at the back door at dusk, Agnes thought the wind had found a loose board.

The dog wore a tin tag stamped in the shape of a bone, and when Agnes held it to the lamp she read the name Reba. A broad old hound with a limp came next, then a terrier, then a lanky lurcher, and each one had a bone tag on its collar. Caesar. Julia. Deegee, which Agnes said aloud twice before she understood it was a name at all. She fed them mutton scraps and set them by the range, and by morning the yard was printed all over with their feet.
Each night another came up out of the white, and each morning the dogs went out before dawn and came back with snow to their elbows. The tracks they made ran down the fell, always the same way. Agnes followed them one grey afternoon when the cloud lifted. The prints went past the broken wall and the boulders, down through the bracken to the beck, and there in the lee of the bank stood a cottage with smoke rising straight from its chimney.
Inside, Tom Garrow lay under three coats with his leg splinted, and his wife had been feeding the children on bread and boiled nettles since the carter's road closed. The dogs had gone out looking for the family when the wool wagon failed to come down. Agnes stood in the doorway with snow on her shoulders, and the dogs pushed past her into the warm. In the spring the ledger at the Drover's Rest had four names written in its margin, each one beside a small inked paw.
