Comedy and tragedy masks with treble clef
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small fine line tattoo shows a smiling comedy mask on the left and a downturned tragedy mask on the right, with a treble clef between them. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The close-up crop places the tattoo on bare skin above the waistband of denim jeans, with a hand visible at the right edge.

The snow had stopped by the time Ruth finished the lambing pens, but the barn still smelt of wet straw, and the stage lights hummed in the far corner where the rehearsal had left them on. Her brother had strung them from the hayrail that morning, because the village hall roof had come down in the November gales and the Christmas show had nowhere else to go.

Nobody in Hollin Fold had ever seen a play performed properly. They had sung hymns in the chapel and bellowed at the Friday quiz, but they had never been asked to pretend to be someone else. Mrs Aske, who ran the lending library from her front room, had brought the masks down in a shoebox: a pair of papier mache faces, one grinning, one turned down at the corners, painted decades ago by a schoolteacher who had since moved to Leeds. Between them, tied to a scrap of card, was a treble clef somebody had bent from picture wire.
"They're for the chorus," Mrs Aske said. "Whoever wears them sings the bits in between."
Ruth held the sad mask up to the bulb. The paint had flaked along one cheek, leaving a pale patch like a healed graze. She thought of her father, who had sung bass in the chapel for forty years and had stopped the winter the ewes went down with fluke, and she put the mask on before she could think better of it.
The barn went quiet except for the lights. Then Ruth began the first line of the carol, slightly flat, and somewhere behind the feed store a ewe answered her.
