The gear train had seized again by the time the last ferry bell rang over the harbour, and Maud Ashdown still had her loupe screwed into one eye when the boy came in dripping from the quay. He set a pocket watch on the bench as if it might bite him. "It was my grandad's," he said. "It stopped the night the Calliope went down, and I want it running before the tide turns."

Maud turned the case over in her palm. Nickel cogs nested inside the lid, and beneath the cracked glass a compass rose sat where the numerals should have been, its needle trembling against the pin. She had mended a hundred clocks and never one that wanted to point somewhere. She cleaned the escapement with a feather and a drop of oil, working until the lamp smoked and the boy's breath had fogged the window twice. At last the balance wheel ticked, the minute hand crept forward, and the needle swung once, hesitated, and settled.

It did not point at the sea. It pointed up the hill, past the chapel steeple, towards the mill where the night shift had started an hour ago.

"That's wrong," the boy said. "Grandad always said it was north."

"Your grandad was a sailor. Sailors learn to trust what the sea tells them." Maud closed the case with a soft click and pressed it into his cold hands. "Your mother works up there, doesn't she? I'd go and see if she's had her supper."
