Concentric circle and gradient bands on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm with a large dotwork circle near the elbow, drawn as a solid black ring with a smaller dark disc inside. Bands of stippled dots run from the circle towards the wrist, fading from pale grey at the elbow to solid black at the wrist. The pale skin, black background and single arm in a palm-up pose give the image a stark, centred composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the shutter half up before the church clock finished its four, and the cold came in low along the floor like something that had been waiting outside all night. The ovens were still ticking as they gave up the last of the evening's firing. She didn't light the big one yet. Her grandmother had never trusted a clock over a window.

The window was the colour of wet slate. Across the boards, the streetlamp laid down bands of grey, one after another toward the back door, each a shade darker than the last, until the far corner was pure black where the flour sacks were stacked. On the bench, the iron ring from the starter crock had worn a dark circle into the wood, with a smaller disc of soot inside it, the way it always did when someone set a hot pan down without thinking.

Her grandmother used to say the sky would tell you when the dough was ready, if you let it. Nell watched the grey move. The bands softened and paled as the sky lifted over the chimney pots, and she lifted the damp cloth from the bowl. The dough had doubled in the dark. It was ready.

She lit the big oven and waited for the iron to warm, then slid the first tray in. The last band of shadow slipped off the floor as the light came up behind the glass, and she realised she had been holding her breath, the way you do at a door you have only just learned to open.
