Morag had the tin of white paint open on the slipway when the wind backed round to the north, and she knew she had perhaps an hour before the tide turned the bay into a slick of rope and weed. Her father's boat, the Ailsa Dove, sat upturned on the stones with her bottom scraped to bare wood. He had asked for a mark on her stern before he crossed to the mainland for the winter, something the Scarp men could pick out from a mile off in the murk.

She had thought of a cross, then a fish, then nothing at all. What she painted in the end was three rings, one inside the other, the outer one so wide she had to lean over the transom to keep her hand steady. The centre she left clear for the star. Old Donald from the shop came down with his stick to watch and said it looked like a target for the gulls. She told him the gulls were welcome to it.
The star was harder. Her first went lopsided, all its points pulling towards the harbour wall, so she scraped it off with a knife and started again. This time she counted the arms the way her mother had taught her to count knots on a line, one point for each thing worth coming home to: the boat, the bell on the pier, the lamp in the window, the rope that never slipped, and the promise to be back by the first gale.
When the paint dried she stood at the top of the slip and saw that from the road it looked like a shield someone had set down carefully and forgotten. Her father would laugh at that. The north wind dropped as the light went, and out past the skerry the first of the boats turned its nose for home, guided by a mark it could not yet see.
