Constellation tattoo flash sheet with 20 star charts
Colour · Flash
The sheet shows twenty constellation designs arranged in a grid, each drawn as blue dots for stars joined by dotted lines. Each design has a code, dimensions in inches and millimetres, and a star count printed beneath it. The layout is even and the figures are small and evenly spaced on a plain white background.

The guard at Strelna held my passport up to the lamp as if the photograph might be lying. Below him the river ran black beneath the bridge, and above it the sky was clearer than I had seen it since leaving the city. My grandfather taught me the stars in a bakery loft when I was seven, tapping the flour-dusted ceiling with a wooden spoon. Andromeda, he said, is a chain of princesses nobody can rescue. Cassiopeia is a queen who boasted. I never learned whether he believed any of it.

The guard asked my purpose. I said I was visiting my aunt, which was true, and that I had brought forty loaves for her wedding, which was also true but not what he wanted. He turned the pages slowly. Tucked inside was a sheet I had copied from a library wall: twenty small blue constellations in a grid, Leo and Libra and Aquarius among them, each with its code and star count. My grandfather had drawn the original the year before he died, pressing so hard the pencil tore through.
The guard frowned at the sheet, then at the sky. He tipped his head back, counted under his breath, and said, Scorpius has the wrong tail, there are only three stars in that hook. I told him the chart was printed small and the sting was always the hardest part to see. He laughed, a short surprised sound, and handed my papers back with the sheet still folded inside them.
On the far bank I stopped and looked up. Scorpius hung low over the hills, its hook pointing at the lights of my aunt's village. I counted its tail once for my grandfather, then walked on with the bread still warm under my arm.
