Couple in a vintage truck with an arm tattoo

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Two people sit side by side in the cab of an older green truck, seen from behind, with the man's arm draped over the woman's shoulders. The man's upper arm carries a black and grey tattoo that includes a circular emblem with linework, though the design is partly obscured and small in the frame. The warm low sun behind them lights the scene in soft orange tones, with the woman in a red plaid shirt and the man in a white t-shirt.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The truck had not been started since Easter, and Maud knew it would sulk before it gave in. She leaned across the bench seat, her shoulder against Teodor's, the sun coming through the back window in a flat orange sheet, and turned the key while he pumped the pedal the way his father had taught him. The engine coughed. Nothing else happened. On the dashboard, beside a crack in the glass, the little brass compass her grandmother had screwed there was swinging slowly, as if it had lost interest in north.

"It's not the battery," Teodor said. "It's the points." He had said that about most things since they bought the truck from a man in Dunstable who wanted it gone by Friday. Maud was not listening. She was watching the needle settle, not on north, but on a spot past the hedgerow where a lane ran down towards the sea. Her grandmother used to say a compass only lied when you wanted it to.

They pushed the truck down the slope of the field gate, bump-started it at the bottom, and drove with the windows down and the radio dead, following the needle by eye the way you might follow a dog that had decided on a walk. The lane ended at a shingle bank where the wind smelled of diesel and kelp. A fisherman's hut stood with its door open, and along its planks someone had painted a row of circles, each one different, each with a line pointing somewhere else.

Teodor looked at the hut, then at her. "Which one is ours?" Maud lifted the compass from the dash and held it flat in her palm. The needle had stopped wobbling. It was pointing at the sea, where there was nothing at all, and she laughed, because for once she didn't mind being wrong about where they were going.
