Small crescent moon outline on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon is drawn as a single black outline on pale skin. The line is thin and even, with no shading, and the moon sits in the middle of the frame against a dark background at the edge. The ink is black and the image is a close, straight-on photograph.

Every Thursday the rain came down on the market at Hollin Cross, and every Thursday old Mabel Furnival set up her stall under the awning by the fishmonger's, selling things the weather couldn't spoil. Tin lanterns, pegs, spoons carved from horn. Nobody bought the moon. It hung on a nail behind her, a hoop of pale wire the size of a saucer, and when people asked what it was for she said it was for the nights nobody could see.

Her grandson Tom came to help with the stall the winter his mother went to the coast. He was nine and bored and kept drawing on the wet canvas with a stub of charcoal. One evening he made a crescent, then rubbed out the middle with his thumb, leaving only the rim. "That's not a moon," Mabel said. "That's the edge of one." He shrugged and said the inside was only waiting.
The next morning the rain stopped for the first time in a fortnight, and the stall's shadow lay long across the cobbles. A woman in a green coat stopped to ask for a lantern, and when Mabel reached for the wire moon to show her, it had gone soft and silver, lit from within like a lamp. Nobody in Hollin Cross could say where the light came from. Mabel only smiled and wrapped the woman's lantern in brown paper.
Tom still draws the outline and leaves the middle empty. He says that is how you let the night in.
