Crescent moon and mountains on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a crescent moon sits above two jagged mountain peaks on the side of a foot near the ankle. The linework is thin and mostly solid black, with slightly uneven edges typical of a fresh or lightly healed design. The image is a close, slightly angled phone photograph with a coloured woven bracelet visible on the ankle above the tattoo.

The last working map of the high passes was printed on something that wasn't paper, and Ilse Varga had carried it folded inside her coat for eleven days. The ridge on its surface looked like a row of broken teeth. Below her, the valley floor had turned the colour of old pewter, and the relay towers that used to hum along the road were just skeletons now, their cables sagging like wet string.

She reached the saddle as the light went, and the crescent moon came up over the eastern shoulder thin as a fingernail paring. Her father had always said you could steer by it if you knew the old names for the peaks. She didn't know the names. She had only the map's grey outlines and the stubborn fact of the rock itself, which had outlasted every city that tried to put a number on it.
She unwrapped the strip of woven cord from her wrist, the one her sister had knotted in red and blue and green before the evacuation, and tied it to the cairn at the top of the pass. The wind took its loose ends and snapped them flat. Ilse looked at the two peaks below, black against the sky, and for the first time since the sirens she felt the ground hold steady underneath her. Then she shouldered the pack and started down the other side, toward the lights of a village she had never been able to find on any map at all.
