Crescent moon on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon outline sits on the inner wrist of a hand held in a loose fist against white, creased bedsheets. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading. The soft, neutral composition keeps the tattoo as the clear focus at the lower centre of the frame.

The lighthouse keeper at Scarrow Cove had a daughter who could not sleep unless the tide was out. Her mother had tried everything: warm milk, the wool blanket from the boat, a hymn sung through twice. Nothing worked until the night the crescent moon hung low over the breakwater, thin as a fishhook, and the girl asked why it looked as if someone had taken a bite out of the sky.

Her father said the moon was only waiting for its turn to be full, the way the boats waited in the harbour for the ebb. So each night after that she slipped out with a tin of lamp oil and sat on the sea wall, counting the nights until the round white face came back. Fishermen's wives saw her there and crossed themselves, but nobody stopped her, because she always came home before the bell.
On the thirtieth night the moon was gone altogether. The girl waited until the sky turned grey, then walked along the shingle to the old chapel where the drowned men's names were painted on the rafters. She sat down under them and said, quite plainly, that she was tired of waiting for things to come back. The chapel was quiet. Then a crack of light came through the door, and there was the moon, a new sliver, rising out of the water exactly where it always had.
She went home and slept until noon. When her father asked what she had been doing, she held up her wrist, where a ring of ink had been drawn the same way her mother had drawn her name on every jar of jam: thin, neat, and meant to last.
