Small star and crescent moon on a wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small solid black star sits above an outlined crescent moon on the inner wrist, with the hand clenched in the upper part of the frame. The star is filled in solid black while the moon is drawn as a thin black outline with a pale centre. The background is a plain beige wall with soft, even lighting.

Pull your chairs in, the lot of you, because my voice doesn't carry the way it did in the days when Mr Pring rang the bell at Ashworth Primary. You remember the ceiling of the dinner hall, the sky he had painted over our heads in nineteen seventy-one? Every child in the school was given one square of blue and told to add something to it.

Two girls were handed the same square. Nell Harrigan, who never stopped talking, painted her star solid and black as a boot, and told anyone who would listen that it was the brightest thing in the heavens. Dorrit Pask, who could not sit still in a pew but could keep a secret in her coat pocket for a month, drew her moon in thin lines and left the middle pale. She said she was saving the paint. The truth was she did not think the moon needed filling in to be seen.

Pring said the moon was too faint and made her go over it twice. She did not. For a whole year she sat under that ceiling, chin on her fist, watching Nell's star burn over the custard and waiting for it to notice the thing beside it.

Forty years on, Nell came back to the hall for the reunion and found the ceiling had been painted white, every square gone. Dorrit was standing by the urn with her hand closed around something. When Nell asked what it was, Dorrit opened her palm and showed her a scrap of blue card, with a crescent drawn on it in thin lines, the middle left pale.
