Crescent moon tattoo on the inner wrist
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
An open palm is shown with a small, solid black crescent moon tattooed on the inner wrist. The hand holds a dark leather pouch bound with thin leather cords ending in orange beads, and a metal ring is worn on one finger. The brown fur backdrop and warm tones frame the hand and the pouch, with the tattoo sitting low in the frame.

The last of the Harrowgate Wonder Show went north in the back of a coal lorry, because the horses had been sold in October and nobody could say what else to do with the wagons. Old Tobiah Prale kept the purse. It was leather, the size of a hen's egg, and it had been his mother's. Inside were nine orange beads on cords and a lock of his daughter's hair, and nothing else worth stealing.

Thieves came in the first snow. They took the calliope, then the painted sign, then the cage the lion had died in. On the seventh night Tobiah sat by the stove with the pouch in his lap and told the children that the moon was a sort of bank. You could leave things with it and it would hold them until you came back, but you had to pay it attention, and you could not pay attention with your hands full.
So he carried the pouch up the hill where the old fairground had been, opened it, and tipped the beads out one by one onto the frosted grass. Each bead rolled a little way and stopped. Above them the crescent hung thin as a paring. He said the names of everything they had lost: the bear, the stilts, the girl who could fold herself into a barrel. At each name a bead rolled down the hill towards the river.
In the morning the thieves were found in a ditch by the Ouse with their pockets full of brass rings and no notion how they had got there. The beads were gone. The show was not gone, not quite, but it had nothing left in it to take, and Tobiah said that was the same as keeping it.
