Crocodile head tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A detailed crocodile head wraps across the forearm, with its textured scaled skin, open jaw and rows of teeth rendered in fine shading. The eye is the focal point, a bright orange iris with a dark slit pupil set into the brow. Greens, olive and tan tones dominate, and the dark blurred background makes the head stand out.

The alder carr at the edge of Hollin Wood had been left alone since the miller's boy went in after a dropped hat and did not come out. The village kept its cows on the far bank and its children on the near one, and everyone agreed the thing in the black water was older than the church, with one eye that burned like a coal forgotten in a grate.

Tobias Reed, seventeen and too proud to be afraid, went down to the reeds on Midsummer Eve with a lantern, a sack of salt pork and a question. His grandmother had told him the creature kept the village's debts in its belly, and that a man who settled his own in full might walk home dry.

The water parted without a sound. The jaw came up, slow as a cart being hauled out of a ditch, and the teeth caught the lantern light like rows of tallow pegs. It did not bite. It spoke in the voice of wet stone and asked him what he owed. Tobias said he owed nothing, that his grandmother kept the ledger. The creature laughed, a dry clatter, and turned its great head so he could see the scales along its neck. Cut into one of them, in a neat hand he knew from the parish register, was his grandmother's name, with a date from the year the miller's boy had drowned.

He walked home by the long road without looking back. When he reached the cottage, the kettle was cold, the chair by the hearth was empty, and the ledger lay open on the table with a fresh line in ink: Maud, paid in full.
