Crown and FOB triangle on the back of a hand

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black tattoo on the back of a hand shows a crown above a triangular shape with the letters FOB inside it. The linework is solid and uniform with flat black fill, and there is no shading or colour. The hand is held against another hand, and a black wristband with white lettering sits at the bottom of the frame.

Pell had carved the triangle into the ferry's brass plate the winter the river froze, and the harbourmen still called it the Three-Cornered Crown, though nobody had worn a crown in Mardow for two hundred years. The old king had left behind only a signet, a copper key and a wooden box of letters nobody could read, each marked with the same three capitals. Hester Vane, who swept the customs house and was not supposed to open the box, read them aloud one evening to the lamplighter, and he laughed until he had to sit down.

They took the box to the frost fair on the Tench, where a clockmaker named Oriel Dunn claimed the letters were a password to the sealed locks of the river toll. She wanted a bargain: the box for her quarter share of the crossing. Hester refused, then agreed, then refused again, and by midnight the two of them were gripping one another's wrists across the counter, neither willing to be the first to let go while the ice cracked under the stall.

When the bell rang for the dawn tide, the box was open and empty. The letters had been sewn into the lining of Hester's coat all along, and the crown Oriel had hunted for three years turned out to be a tin cap she used to keep the cold out of her ears. The river carried the rest of it south, and the two of them never agreed on who had won, which the ferrymen say is how you know a fair bargain was struck.
