Cupcake and cartoon animal tattoos on fingers

Hand · Colour · Photo

Two small tattoos sit on adjacent fingers. The lower one shows a cupcake with pink frosting, a red cherry on top and a green striped wrapper, outlined in dark ink. Above it, a partly cropped pink and blue cartoon animal, possibly a pig, is visible against a soft, slightly warm-toned background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pig had escaped from the bakery on a Tuesday, which everyone in Marrow Bay agreed was the only sensible day for it. Mrs Ogilvie found him halfway up the chapel steps, nose deep in a paper bag of currants, and carried him back under one arm while he complained in a high, cheerful squeal the whole length of the harbour road.

The baker's boy, Tom Fennick, was sixteen and had been promised a wage that never arrived. He stood in the doorway with flour to his elbows and asked if the pig was hurt. She said he was only proud, and that a proud pig needed feeding before he needed sympathy. So Tom fed him a pastry crust, then a second, and by noon the animal had decided the bakery was his and nobody else's.

The trouble started with the cupcakes. Tom had made a tray of them for the summer fair, pink frosting piped in a tight curl, a glossy cherry set on each, the paper cases striped green like a bandstand awning. Someone, probably the pig, had licked the frosting clean off the top one and left the cherry standing alone on the rack like a small red lighthouse.

Mrs Ogilvie looked at it for a long time. Then she took out her purse, pressed a shilling into Tom's palm, and told him the pig was no longer his problem. "He's yours now," she said, "and the cherry's mine." She ate it on the spot, stone and all, which Tom always said was the proudest thing he ever saw an old woman do.
