Ines had been told the cargo hold of the Halvard Reach held nothing but seed stock and spare hull plating, so when her scanner pinged a warm pocket behind the hydroponic racks she assumed a fault in the sensor. It was not a fault. Wedged between two crates of frozen barley sat a pair of brass-jointed teddy bears, no taller than her forearm, each cradling a red enamel heart. Someone had painted their paws mauve and given them dotted noses, the way children on the old orbital schools used to.

She carried them to the galley and set them on the steel bench under the lamp. The heart on the left bear had a hairline crack running down it, and the right bear had lost a stitch of paint from one ear. Hendrik, the cook, leaned over her shoulder with his ladle still dripping. "Those are from the nursery deck," he said. "They stopped making them before we left Earth. My mother had one like that."

Ines turned the bears so they faced each other. Their painted eyes were uneven, one slightly higher, as if the artist had stopped to laugh halfway through. She found the registry chip in the left one's foot, and when she read the name stamped beside it, a child's name, she felt the ship's slow hum change pitch, the way it did when a long shift ended.

She logged the pair to the manifest under lost property and did not send them to salvage. Instead she clipped the right bear to the strap of her toolkit, where it swung against her hip for the rest of the shift, and the left one she carried back to the nursery deck, sitting it on the windowsill where the stars drifted past, two hearts turned towards the same dark.
