Mickey and Minnie kissing tattoos on fingers
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest together, each finger carrying a cartoon tattoo of a mouse character in profile, with Mickey on the left and Minnie on the right. The tattoos use bold solid black fills with white faces and simple outlines, and the eyes are closed as the characters lean in to kiss. The black and white photograph is framed closely on the hands against a soft, blurred textured background.

Ned had been watching the lovers on the big white screen since the autumn, climbing the cable run behind the projection booth of the Lantern Cinema each Thursday to see them. The kiss always came at the same place, just after the piano stopped, and it always made him hold his breath. Ada, who kept the nest in the warm end of the spool cupboard, said he was going about it wrong.

"You've got to shut your eyes first," she said, sorting a crust of bread into two equal halves with her small pink paws. "Otherwise you're only looking, and looking isn't the same." Ned tried it on the brass rail of the lamp housing that night, leaning in until his whiskers brushed the warm metal. When he opened his eyes he saw old Mr Oddie watching from the doorway, a biscuit tin tucked under one arm.
Mr Oddie did not reach for the traps. He set the tin down on the bench, took out a flat square of seed cake, and wedged a scrap of paper beneath it. In careful pencil it read: Mind the gate, it sticks. Ned and Ada found the advice useful for years afterwards, mostly during reel changes, and Mr Oddie never once mentioned the bread that went missing from the pantry.
On the last night of the season they went up together. Ada took the left side of the lens housing and Ned the right, and the beam from the lamp fell across them both like a spotlight. They shut their eyes and leaned in across the warm glass. Down in the dark auditorium the lovers on screen kissed too, the audience sighed, and the two small shadows met in the light just as the film jumped, and nobody minded at all.
