Mickey and Minnie kissing tattoos on fingers
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching cartoon tattoos show Mickey and Minnie Mouse facing each other with their eyes closed as if kissing, one on each of two adjacent fingers. The linework is bold and solid black with white areas left unshaded, giving a simple, flat, graphic look. The black and white photograph is softly lit and shows the fingers pressed together against a grey background.

You queue outside the Palace picture house in Ashgrove with your collar turned up against the coal dust drifting off the tips, and Ivy Mather is three places ahead of you in her good gloves, pretending she has not seen you. The Saturday matinee is a cartoon, black and white, two mice in a meadow, and the whole row of pit lads and their sisters is already laughing before the projector has finished stuttering.

Afterwards you walk her the long way past the chapel wall, where the slag heap throws its shadow across the lane. She says her father will skin her if he sees her with a lad from the lower rows, and you say he will have to catch you first, and she laughs in the way that makes the lamplighter look up. Her little finger brushes yours in the cold, and neither of you moves it away.
Nobody in Ashgrove could afford ink, so the idea sounds mad when she mentions it on the bridge: the two mice, one on each finger, drawn in boot black and left white where the light would sit. The man who does it in the back room of the Miners' Arms works with a sewing needle and a jar of soot, his tongue between his teeth. It takes an hour, and it hurts more than either of you admits.
Forty years on, with the pit shut and the picture house turned into flats, you still hold your hands up in a certain light, and the two of them kiss over the knuckles again, eyes shut, as if the reel had never run out.
