Cupcake tattoo on fingers

Hand · Colour · Photo

Two small colour tattoos sit on adjacent fingers of a hand. The main subject is a cupcake with pink frosting, a red cherry on top and a green striped wrapper, drawn with bold dark outlines and flat colour fills. Above it, a pastel pink and blue cartoon creature is only partly in frame, and the soft, warm-toned photo has a blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The buffet at Thornbury Junction had one cupcake left by half past six, and every evening a small pink creature came down from the signal gantry to look at it. Nobody in the town knew where it had come from. Albert Dunn, the stationmaster, said it had ridden in the lost property box in 1961 and never found its way out, though he had never opened the box to check.

Nell baked the cakes each morning in the room above platform two. She wrapped every one in green striped paper because her mother had, and the creature liked stripes better than anything. Its voice was like a kettle coming to the boil. "Give me the cherry," it said, "and I will tell you which train is the last one." Nell said she had no interest in trains. She handed over the cherry anyway, since she had never liked them much.

The creature ate the cherry in three neat bites and climbed onto the ledge above the ticket window. "The last train is the one nobody booked," it said. "It leaves when the frosting goes hard." Nell waited, and the lamps went out down the line one by one until only the two of them were left under the clock. The frosting did not go hard. It stayed soft and sweet, and at ten past twelve she heard a whistle from a track that had been pulled up in 1974.

In the morning the cupcake was gone. On the counter lay a single cherry stone, polished bright, and the pink creature was asleep on the timetable board, snoring as gently as steam.
