Its ovens had gone cold the winter the flour merchant died, and the whole street had got used to going hungry in a tidy sort of way. Nobody in the terraces knew the cat's name, so they called her Mrs Button, which she did not care for. She wore blue dungarees with green sleeves, and every step she took left a grey print on the wet cobbles, so by morning the city had a map of her wandering.

She found the baker's grandson, Idris, asleep on a sack of sugar with a cupcake in each hand. He was ten and too proud to cry. She sat on the sugar beside him and fed him the lollipop one swirl at a time, and each swirl was a birthday nobody had remembered. The cupcakes above her head glowed purple and green, and wrapped sweets rolled across the floor like tiny lanterns.

When the bakery opened again at dawn, the paw prints had dried into the frost on every step from the river to the church, and people followed them to the door without quite knowing why. Idris swept the last print off the step with his sleeve and left the rest for whoever came next.
