Cupcake with pumpkin and candy corn
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A cupcake with swirled purple frosting sits at the centre, topped with an orange jack-o'-lantern pumpkin and surrounded by four candy corns and soft grey swirls. The cupcake case is shaded with dark green and grey lines, and the candy corns use yellow, orange and white with fine black outlines. The tattoo is photographed close up on smooth skin, with the design filling the centre of the frame.

Mrs Okonedo always said the frosting had to be whipped until it held its shape like a tired sheep lying down, and never a minute less. So at half past four, with the ovens ticking and the window still black over Hollis Street, Tomasz was whipping lilac buttercream while I cut the paper cases. He had been sulking since Halloween stock arrived in a crate marked FRAGILE, which he claimed was a lie, because nothing in that crate had ever been fragile in its life.

"Forty cupcakes for the school," he said. "Purple, all of them. Mrs Okonedo wants the little jack-o'-lanterns on top, the squat ones with the crooked grins. Four candy corns each, pushed in at the sides, and not one of them chipped."
I counted the candy corns into paper cups, yellow tips and white bellies, and they rattled like teeth. When the first tray came out of the oven the kitchen smelled of burnt sugar and wet leaves, though there were no leaves in Hollis Street, only the tall lamp outside the chemist's and a fox that came to the bins most nights.
We piped the frosting in spirals, round and round, the way Mrs Okonedo taught us, and then the pumpkins went on, one after another, until the whole tray grinned at us. Tomasz stepped back, wiped his hands, and said, "They look like they're about to tell us something."
That was when the fox appeared at the back door, sat, and looked at the tray with the patience of a customer who had already paid. Tomasz laughed and tossed it the one cupcake that had come out lopsided. It took the candy corns first, one by one, and left the frosting for the morning.
