Cupcake with cherry on a lower leg
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A cupcake with white frosting piped in a tall swirl and a glossy red cherry on top sits inside a red paper case. Soft smoke-like swirls in grey and brown frame the cake on a dark teal and black background. The shading gives the frosting and cherry a three-dimensional, highly detailed look, and the composition is centred on the cake.

Nell had been up since four, piping frosting in the cramped back of the caravan, because Mr Ambrose had announced that the Northern Ring would close on Saturday and someone ought to mark it properly. The cherries came last. She had found a tin of them at a Sunday market in Wakefield, and she pressed one into the peak of each swirl and watched the bulb's yellow light catch the wet red skin.

Outside, the generator coughed and grey smoke unspooled across the lot, drifting between the tent poles the way it had every evening that season. Pip, who had lifted the piano for nineteen years, sat on an upturned crate with his boots off and eyed the tray through the door. 'Nobody here eats anything pretty,' he said. 'They want chips and the elephant.' Nell told him the elephant had retired to a field outside Doncaster, and Pip laughed until he coughed.
She carried the tray across the field as the dusk came down blue. The big top stood with its flaps tied back, the sawdust gone the colour of ash, the ticket box empty, and the painted sign above the entrance so faded that only the word Circus still showed clearly. She set the cakes out on the bottom step of the ring stairs, one for every seat sold that week, which was eleven, and then she counted again to be sure.
Mr Ambrose came down the aisle in his good coat and stood looking at the row of little red cases for a long time. He picked one up, turned it so the cherry faced the lamp, and said nothing at all. Then he sat on the step, took a bite, and laughed like a man who had forgotten he could. Behind them the generator died, and the smoke hung over the lot a moment longer before it drifted off into the dark.
