Purple cupcake on an ankle
Traditional · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A cupcake with a tall swirl of purple frosting topped with small green and yellow sprinkles, sitting in a teal striped paper case. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with simple flat fills and soft shading on the frosting. The tattoo is centred on the outer ankle and sits against plain skin with a dark surface beneath.

The frosting had already slumped by the time the miller's boy reached the orchard gate, so Hester sent him back for a cloth and told him to keep the tin level. Nobody in Lower Quabb had ever carried a cake so carefully. The case was teal and striped down its sides like a rowing boat's painted hull, and on top the purple swirl stood up tall, dusted with green and yellow sprinkles that Hester had pressed in one by one with the tip of a knife.

Old Mrs Pell kept the walled garden on the hill and had not spoken to anyone since the spring the church bells were taken down. She grew nothing but gooseberries and grudges, people said, and the gooseberries were sour enough to make a dog turn round. Hester had heard that she would not eat anything with sugar in it, not since her husband died on a Sunday with a honey cake on his plate.
The boy waited at the wall while Hester climbed the stile. Mrs Pell was on her knees in the beds, pulling bindweed with the patience of someone who expected it back. Hester set the cupcake on the flat stone by the water butt and said nothing at all, which was the only manners she had decided to use.
For a long while Mrs Pell pretended not to look. Then she sat back on her heels, wiped her hands down her apron, and picked the cake up the way you would lift a bird with a broken wing. She took a bite that was far too big. Purple frosting caught on her lip, and Hester saw her shoulders go loose.
When the cake was gone Mrs Pell wiped her mouth and asked for another, and then another. By the end of the month the wall was low enough to step over, and the paper cases had begun to come up in the bed by the gate, teal and striped, each with a little green shoot sprouting from its middle.
