Realistic cupcake with cherry on an arm
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
A cupcake with swirled white frosting, a red cherry with a stalk, and small red heart shapes is shown in a realistic style. The shading creates strong highlights and depth across the frosting and the pleated grey paper case, with a dark shadow beneath. Red ink dominates the cherry and sauce, while the case and frosting are rendered in greys and near-black.

Nobody in Hollin Cross had ever seen Vera Pender cry over a sponge, so when the Institute's tea urn went quiet at half past two, we all knew something had gone wrong with the cherries.

She had been baking for the summer show since before most of us were born. That year she piped her frosting in a tall white swirl, set a single cherry on the peak with its stalk still on, and spooned red sauce around the rim so it ran down through the grey pleats of her paper cases like a tide coming in. Tiny hearts she had dotted in with a cocktail stick. The judge, a man from Harrogate who wore a waxed jacket to a village hall, stood over the table for a long minute and said nothing at all.
Then the cherry rolled. It rolled off the frosting, across the trestle, and into the lap of Dennis Pender's old spaniel, who had come along to the show as he always had, and who ate it before anyone could move.
Vera sat down on the chapel step with the empty case in her hands. I sat beside her and offered her my flask, and she laughed so hard she had to wipe her eyes with the back of her wrist, leaving a red smear of sauce across her cheek like a stripe of paint.
Next morning the card on her table read Highly Commended, and beneath it, in the judge's hand, a line none of us expected: Best cupcake I have ever failed to finish.
