Cupcake and stars on the lower abdomen

Other · Colour · Photo

A cupcake with pink frosting, sprinkles and a red cherry sits in a teal blue wrapper at the centre of the design. Surrounding it are small stars in turquoise, purple, yellow, pink and green, plus scattered confetti-like dashes. The bold dark outlines and flat, cartoon-like colour fills give it a playful look, set against a background of skin and a black fabric printed with skulls.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the tray balanced on one forearm and the lock gate groaning open ahead when the wash from a hire cruiser hit the Marigold broadside. Thirty-six cupcakes, pink frosting piped in tight swirls by her uncle before sunrise, slid as one sheet toward the gunwale. She lunged, caught the rail with her hip, and watched three of them tumble into the cut. Pink frosting bloomed on the brown water like a spilt paint pot, and a cherry bobbed off to one side, still upright, as if it had planned the whole thing.

"Leave them," Dev called from the tiller, not looking up from the tow rope. "The ducks have had worse off us."

But Nell had promised Gwen Pargeter at the lock cottage that the Marigold's cakes would sell on a Tuesday, and Gwen had laughed and said nothing sold on a Tuesday in Hebden Bridge. Nell pulled the surviving tray in against her chest and watched the sprinkles escape. They scattered across the planks and onto the towpath in dashes of teal and violet and sunshine yellow, bright as confetti after a wedding nobody had invited the canal to. Two boys from a moored narrowboat came running, and one of them picked up a sugar star from the gravel and held it to the light like treasure.

Gwen came down from the cottage with her coat over her nightie and bought the last cake for twenty pence, a fair price for something that had nearly drowned. She bit into it on the lock beam with frosting on her chin and said it was worth the swim. That evening Nell swept the stray sprinkles off the cabin roof and found some had lodged in the cracks of the paintwork, turquoise and purple, where the canal would keep them long after the cakes were gone.
