Cupcake with pink frosting and sprinkles

Colour · Photo

A cartoon cupcake with a tall swirl of pink frosting, scattered multicoloured sprinkles and a pale yellow sponge base sits inside a teal wrapper. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with soft shading on the frosting and the pleats of the wrapper. Small sprinkle marks surround the cupcake on a plain background of skin.

The gulls had already got into the bins by the time Ada Finlay carried the last tray down from the ovens, and she swore at them in the way her grandmother had taught her, which was in two languages and with a wooden spoon.

Her bakery stood at the top of the harbour road on Skerrow, the only one on the island that sold anything sweeter than oatcakes. Every Saturday the ferry brought mainland folk over with their coins and their complaints, and every Saturday they asked for the same thing: a cupcake with pink frosting piled high like a wave about to break, sprinkles scattered over it like spilt sweeties, and wrappers the colour of the sea on a clear morning. Ada made them that way because her mother had, and because nobody on Skerrow ever asked for anything else.

This Saturday a stranger stepped off the ferry with a child on his hip and a purse with a hole worn through the corner. He wanted a cake for a birthday that was not until Monday, and he had no money, only a smooth grey pebble with a face painted on it in red ink. Ada looked at the pebble for a long time. Then she piped the frosting twice as high, pressed the sprinkles in with her thumb, and handed the cake over for nothing.

On Monday the child came back alone, ferry-sick and grinning, with the pebble clutched in one fist. Ada never learned where the stranger had gone, but she kept the stone on the shelf beside the till, and the next week the gulls left the bins alone.
