Curiouser script tattoo on the inner arm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The design shows the word curiouser written in looping cursive script, with a second, inverted copy of the word that overlaps the first. Both are enclosed by sweeping oval outlines. The linework is medium weight and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The tattoo fills most of the frame against plain skin.

Mab Corrie had swept the Lantern Hall floor every Saturday since she was nine, and she knew the mirror on the north wall better than she knew her own mother's face. It was tall and speckled at the corners, and when the fiddlers struck up, the dancers in it moved a half-beat behind the real ones, as if they were thinking it over first.

The night the travelling men came with the new lamps, the mirror showed a girl Mab did not know. She stood where Mab stood, broom in hand, but her hair was loose and her apron was the wrong colour. She tapped the glass twice and pointed at the floor, then at the word chalked on the board by the door, which said nothing that week except the price of barley. Mab took the chalk and wrote on the glass in greasy white, backwards, so the other girl could read it. The girl read it, laughed, and wrote back the same word, curiouser, then again, curiouser, until the lamps guttered.
Mab's father said mirrors were only silver and lies. Her grandmother, who had come from over the water, said a looking glass remembers what it is asked and gives it back twisted, and that the only safe answer to such a thing was to keep asking. So on the last Saturday of the month Mab stayed late, sweeping in the dark, and the girl in the glass put her palm flat against the inside of the pane.
Mab pressed hers to the other side. The glass was warm, the floor on the far side was swept clean, and somewhere a fiddle was tuning up in a key nobody had played in years.
