A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Margaret had been writing place cards since six o'clock, and by the time the marquee filled she had reached the last table, the one nobody wanted, tucked behind the pillar near the gents. She dipped the quill again. Her grandson had found it in a junk shop in Halesworth, a goose feather that still smelled faintly of the stall, and he insisted it would make the wedding look like something out of a book.

The bride's mother came over with a glass of prosecco she had not touched. "Is it true you wrote the vows out by hand?" she asked. Margaret said she had, three drafts, and that the trick was to let the ink go where it wanted and not chase it. The groom's father had said at the rehearsal that a family was a loop, you could start anywhere and still come back round to the beginning. Margaret suspected he had got that from a greetings card, but she let it stand.

When the speeches came, the groom stood up and read from a folded sheet that shook a little. He thanked the people who had taught him to stay put. Then he turned towards the table behind the pillar and said her name, and everyone looked, and Margaret felt the familiar heat climb her neck.

Afterwards, while the band packed away the amplifiers, she found the vows in her handbag. Under the last line, in her own looping hand, she had written the word family and drawn a loop around it that never quite closed, and at one end a single feather stroke trailed off the page. It was not a signature. It was a promise to be back before breakfast.
