Curled monkey tattoo on a lower leg

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo shows a monkey curled around itself, with its head turned to face forward and a long tail curling at the bottom. The lines are solid and bold with simple shapes and little internal shading, and the photograph is black and white. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against plain skin.

Dear Nell, the flour bin is still wearing the monkey's footprints, and Cook has stopped pretending he doesn't know who ate the last of the currants. It sleeps the way a question curls up, folded tight with its tail wound round its own middle like a rope coiled on the deck. Every morning I find it in the galley, in the warm space above the range, and every morning it lifts its head to look at me as if I am the one who has broken in. It will take a biscuit from my hand and nothing else. Cook says it is a thief and a sailor's ghost, and tried to put it ashore in the lifeboat, but the boatswain's wife had already taken a liking to it, so it stays.

Last night Cook dropped a tray of dishes and the whole ship woke to the clatter. The monkey was on the highest shelf before the last plate stopped spinning, tail hooked over the rail, watching the mess with the grave look of a magistrate. I laughed until Cook threw a ladle at me. The creature did not even flinch.

Mind you do not tell Mother. She thinks I am learning my letters. I am, I suppose, though the teacher on board is a monkey with more manners than the mate.

Your loving brother, Tom
