Sitting cat outline on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A loose, sketchy outline of a sitting cat seen from the side, with its head turned slightly and its tail curling along the bottom of the design. The linework is black, varies in weight, and has no shading or fill, so the cat is defined only by its contour against the skin. The photograph is black and white and shows part of a patterned sleeve at the upper left.

The Sorrel had been rolling since the Dogger Bank, and every pan in the galley had found its way to the deck except the big iron stockpot, which Nell had lashed down with two bungees and a prayer. Mabel sat on the warm lip of the range rail where the heat came up off the burners, back straight, looking at nothing in particular. In four years on the coaster run to Rotterdam, Nell had never seen the cat fall off anything.

Dev, the cook's mate, came in from the wheelhouse with his face the colour of porridge and asked whether they ought to turn back. Nell said no, the cat would know if it were bad. He laughed, then looked up at Mabel, who had turned her head toward the porthole as though she were listening to something moving under the hull. Nell cracked eggs one-handed against the bowl and braced her hip against the counter as the deck tilted and came back.
When the next big sea lifted the stern, the cat's tail lifted with it and swept once along the rail, slow, the way it always did before the bell went for the mess. Dev watched the tail hook back on itself and settle. Then Mabel stood, stretched until her spine made a small clicking sound, and dropped onto the mat as if the sea had been an argument she had decided to win.
By the time the kettle boiled the swell had eased to a long, lazy heave. Nell wiped a grease stripe from the rail where the cat had sat, and the clean patch stayed there, the exact shape of something that had kept its watch.
