Small monkey with curled tail on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small monkey with a round head, large eyes and a curled tail is drawn in bold black solid linework on the inner wrist. The tail sweeps down and curls into a spiral, and the limbs are simplified into smooth, flat shapes. The photo is taken straight on against a dark plastic-covered surface, with the tattoo centred and sharply lit.

You have the lamp trimmed and the wick checked by the time the monkey comes up the stairs, which is more than Harker managed in his three years on the rock. It arrives the way it arrives every evening, hand over hand on the iron rail, its tail uncoiling behind it like a rope let out to a dinghy, then curling tight again at the top where the gallery meets the wind.

Nobody on the mainland believes the story. The Mary Lusk came in on the spring tide with her hold full of tea and her crew gone ashore to the pub, and the only living thing aboard was this small grey-eyed creature wedged in the bilge pump housing, shrieking at the gulls. Ruddock wanted it in the stew pot. You fed it biscuit instead, and now it expects biscuit at sunset the way the sea expects the moon.
Tonight the fog comes in thick enough to swallow the beam at fifty yards. You climb with the lamp swung on its gimbal and the monkey clinging to your collar, its small cold fingers pressed to your neck. Below, a horn sounds, long and then short, a boat feeling for the gap in the rocks. You step out onto the gallery and the monkey leaps to the rail, tail curled as tight as a watch spring, and watches the water with you.
When the boat's lamp finally answers yours, the monkey chatters once, delighted, and climbs back down to sleep in the warm coal store. You stay out in the wet until the last grey of the fog thins, counting the flashes. Morning will bring the relief boat and a letter about the lamp. Tonight there is only the turn of the light and a spiral tail hooked over the railing, holding on.
