A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The potter's boy had cracked three bowls before noon, and old Ebbe gathered each shard from the floor without scolding him. "Your hands are full of the market," he said. "Empty them."

That evening Ebbe dipped a reed in black slip and drew a word across the lid of a water jar. The letters leaned and looped like a river going round stones. "What does it say?" the boy asked. "Serenity," said Ebbe, "the kind a pond keeps when nobody throws a stone in it." Long ago, he said, the people of Sarun had a well so still that travellers came only to see their own faces there. The city grew so proud and loud that no one remembered how to be quiet, and so they chose a widow named Irrel to carry a cup of that water up the hill to the temple. She walked the whole way with her eyes on the water and not on the crowd, and though the streets jostled her and a dog barked at her heels, not one drop spilled.

"Did the crowd go quiet when she arrived?" the boy asked. Ebbe shrugged. "They went quiet because they were tired of their own noise. Irrel only kept walking."

The next morning the boy sat at the wheel, set a fresh lump of clay in the middle, and pressed his palms against it slowly. The clay rose true under his hands. Beside him the water jar sat drying in the sun, the black word shining where the slip had gone on wet.
