Outline star on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small five-pointed star drawn as a thin black outline sits on the inner wrist, with the hand visible at the top of the frame. The linework is even and unshaded, and the star is left open with the skin showing through the centre. The background is a turquoise surface and grey paving, and several beaded and metal bracelets are stacked on the wrist below the tattoo.

The council wants the stairwell painted grey by Friday, so you have until the lift stops groaning to decide which stars survive. Fourteen floors of them, chalked and biro-ed and scratched into the render by kids who never came back to claim them. Mrs Okafor on nine says the stars were there before the block was, which is nonsense, but you let her say it while you hold the torch steady.

Nobody told you the outline stars are the hard ones. A filled star comes off with one swipe of solvent. An open one, drawn in a single careful line, leaves a ghost where the strokes crossed, and the ghost is the part people look at. So you work it with a cotton bud dipped in white spirit, one point at a time, until the middle is just wall and the edges are still there.
On the fourteenth floor the door is propped open with a brick. A boy of about seven sits on the bare boards, holding a silver bead up to the landing light, and he says the star on the wall is his, drawn with a bent nail on the night the power went off. You have heard worse reasons for a mark. You tell him the star can stay if he shows you where the lines cross, and he does, and you leave the middle alone.
By Friday the stairwell is grey from the ground floor up, smooth as a sheet. Only on fourteen, low by the skirting, one open star survives, and when the lift doors part you can see straight through its middle to the car park lights below.
