Dachshund outline on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A single unbroken black outline of a dachshund in profile, with a long body, short legs, a floppy ear and a curled tail. The linework is even and thin, with no shading, and the design sits on pale skin against a glossy plastic backdrop. The composition is centred and the dog faces right.

Dear Tom, the frost has come down the lane again and Fenner has taken to sleeping in the boot of the Volvo rather than his basket by the range, which I suppose is his way of telling me the back kitchen is no place for a dog of his dignity. He is a long creature, Tom, longer every winter it seems, and when he runs up the field with his ears flapping and his tail curled over like a question mark he looks less like a dog than a fountain pen someone has left on the grass.

Mr Askew came up on Tuesday about the badger sett under the hawthorns. He said the setts were spreading toward the new drill and could Fenner be spared to go down and see. I told him Fenner has never been spared anything in his life. Dachshunds were bred for exactly this, the old men used to say, to go down a hole after a badger when the badger would sooner not be found. Fenner went down with his short legs working like a clockwork toy and came up twenty minutes later with mud to the shoulders and an expression of enormous satisfaction, as if he had settled a dispute between the parish council and the weather.
The badger was not there. There was only a hollow, a smell of old bedding, and a glass marble lying in the earth where some child must have dropped it years back. Fenner carried it up in his mouth like a prize. It sits on the windowsill now, next to the teapot. I do not know whose it was, and I suspect Fenner knows and is not telling.
Come at Christmas if you can. The dog misses you, and so, if I am honest, do I. Bring the good tea.
