Dachshund outline with BEAN on a foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

A simple cartoon dachshund is drawn in a black outline with its long body curving along the top of the foot. The ear is filled with pale blue ink, and the word BEAN in black capitals sits beneath the dog's body. The photograph is taken from above on a wooden surface, with the skin lit evenly and the tattoo clearly in focus.

The dog came off the 17:42 for the third Tuesday running, long as a loaf of bread, one ear folded back like a dropped glove. He trotted past the ticket barrier without stopping, which Marjorie Pruett at lost property considered either impudent or very well trained. Nobody claimed him. The guard shrugged and said the animal rode the same carriage every evening and always got off at Wexcombe Junction, never at Wexcombe Road, and never with a lead.

On the fourth evening she followed him. He went down the steps to platform two, sniffed the bench where the old signalman used to eat his sandwiches, and sat in the exact spot, facing the box. Marjorie knew that box. Her brother had worked it until the closures, and Ronnie Gage had been the last man up there, a quiet fellow who kept a small dog with a blue-lined ear and fed it his crusts through the signal hatch. Ronnie had moved to Plymouth with his daughter two winters back. Nobody had thought to tell the dog.

Bean did not look at her. He watched the single green light turn amber, then red, and when the 18:05 eased into the platform he stood, shook out his ears and stepped into the third carriage as though he had booked it months ago. Marjorie stood with her hands in her coat pockets until the tail lights were gone.

That night she walked to the empty signal box, which the council had boarded up but not very well. On the sill, behind a cracked pane, sat a tin of pear drops with the lid rusted shut. She left it where it was. Some things at the junction were not lost, only waiting for the right train.
