Dachshund portrait on upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A dachshund with floppy ears, a dark nose and a thin collar is shown head-on, with its long body and tail stretching upward behind it. The dog is rendered with soft grey shading and fine outlines, giving the fur texture and depth. The tattoo is in black and grey on pale skin, with slight redness around the lines, and sits centred on the upper back.

You have been told twice that the dog will not come off the slipway, and you have believed neither of the men who said it. Mabel is a dachshund roughly the length of a coiled mooring rope, and she has sat at the foot of the Tregarth slipway every evening since the Kittiwake went out past the breakwater in February. Nobody on the quay mentions the Kittiwake. They step around her with their crab pots and leave a herring head on the bottom step, as if it were a tip.

You crouch beside her with a sausage roll from the bakery in your coat pocket, and she does not even glance at it. Her ears are blown flat by the wind off the water and her dark nose stays fixed on the gap between the lighthouse and the rocks. Her collar is buckled one hole too tight, which you notice because your grandfather buckled his bag the same way, and you have not thought about him all week. "Come on, girl," you say. She blows out through her nose like a bellows and does not move.

The horn sounds from the mouth of the harbour. A few gulls lift off the wall. Ted's boat is not the Kittiwake and never will be, and everyone on the quay knows it except, apparently, the dog. You sit down on the cold step, because your knees have stopped arguing with you, and say nothing useful at all.

After a while the tide turns and the lamps come on along the breakwater. Mabel shifts her long warm weight across the stone until it rests against your shin. Neither of you has decided to stay. The light blinks out to sea, and she goes on watching it anyway.
