The officer at Hollin Bridge turned my passport over twice, as though the back might say something different from the front. Behind me a lorry idled and a dog barked somewhere past the wire. In my coat pocket was a twist of brown paper my aunt had pressed into my hand at the bus stop, and I had rehearsed the answer all the way from the coast: it is seed, for a garden I have not yet seen.

He asked me to open the bag. I unrolled the paper on the steel counter and he tipped a few seeds into his palm, dark and striped like the teeth of a comb. What do they grow, he asked. Sunflowers, I said. Taller than a man if you talk to them, my aunt says, though she never once talked to them herself. He almost smiled. He asked why I was carrying them across a border in January, and I had no good answer, so I told him the only true one: she had nothing else small enough to fit in a pocket.

He sat down with the declaration form and I watched his pen hover over the box marked goods to declare. He wrote seeds, one packet, for growing. Then, after a pause, he drew a small heart beside it, a little lopsided, the way a child draws one on a card. He stamped the page and slid it back under the glass without a word, and the lorry behind me lurched forward into the grey.

On the far side of the fence, where the wire met a rusted oil drum, somebody had planted a single stalk in the gravel. Its head was already heavy and bowed, turned towards the road we had come by, as if it were waiting for someone to come back and check on it.
