Dandelion tattoo on a bare foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot stands on grass beside a brick wall, with the bottoms of rolled blue jeans visible at the ankles. A small dandelion with loose seeds drifting away from its head is tattooed on the outer side of the ankle in faded black ink. The soft, warm-toned photograph keeps the design in clear focus, with the second foot visible beside it.

The last of the lorries was already loaded when Mags found the seed heads in the field behind the big top. She stood among them with her arms full of folded canvas, the wind tugging at her cardigan, and counted the years the Halloran Brothers' Travelling Spectacular had camped on this common. Eleven. Tonight would make twelve if the council let them stay another week, and everyone knew it would not.

Teodor came round the caravans with his juggling clubs tucked under one arm, his greasepaint already sweating off in the heat. He was the last of the old clowns and he moved like a man who had stopped expecting applause. "You'll want to blow those before the wind does it for you," he said, nodding at the dandelions. "My mother swore a seed carried off on a sunny day takes your bad luck with it."
Mags dropped the canvas and crouched in the long grass. The first breath was too hard and scattered them into a clump of nettles. The second was gentler. The seeds lifted in a soft grey drift, past the tethered ponies, past the empty lion cage with its door hanging open, over the low brick wall where the old rope was still knotted to a ring in the stone. She watched them go, one by one, until they were specks above the rooftops of the town she had never once been allowed into after dark.
When she stood up, Teodor was gone, and the field was only grass and ruts and the smell of rain coming. Somewhere past the wall, a seed would find a crack in the mortar and stay put.
