Danger Zone lettering on lower lip

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the inside of a lower lip, pulled down with two fingers, with the words DANGER ZONE tattooed in black ink. The lettering uses a hand-drawn, slightly uneven sans serif with thin, consistent strokes and a small gap between the two words. The background is dark and the framing is tight, so the ink stands out against the pale pink lip.

Mrs Pryce wanted the sign done before the Easter tide, and Dessie Lowe had three days and one tin of black enamel. The hoarding ran along the top of the shingle at Shingle Hythe, where the council had decided the old wartime ground was not fit for anybody's dog. He chalked the letters out on the boards the night before, freehand, because a stencil made everything look like the council wanted it to look.

The letters came out uneven. DANGER leaned like a man walking into wind, and the gap before ZONE was wider than he'd meant. Mrs Pryce came down the path with her shopping bag and read it twice. "It looks like someone's shouting," she said. "It's meant to shout," he said. "Nobody reads a sign that mumbles." She sniffed, but she didn't ask him to repaint it.

By the next week the boys from the sailing club had stopped at the hoarding to dare each other across the ground. Dessie watched from the van with his flask. Nobody went over. The sign did its job the way a good warning does, by being slightly ugly and impossible to ignore. He kept the tin and the brush with its split bristles on the dashboard, in case the weather took a letter.

One Sunday a girl stood in front of it a long time, reading, then laughed to herself and took the path the long way round, past the chapel. Dessie saw her stop at the stile to tie a lace she didn't need to tie, looking back once at the boards as if she had been told something and meant to remember it.
