He told me the town misread him. His ex-wife misread him. The sea, he said, had been misreading him since 1987, and the hot water in Room Four was just the latest instance. Mrs Pellow had asked me to bring him extra towels, so I stood there holding them while he explained his feelings about the gulls.

"You've got that look," he said finally, narrowing his eyes at my jacket. "Like nobody has ever understood you either."

"I understand you perfectly," I said. "You booked three nights, you've stayed eleven, and you've been writing a novel about a lighthouse keeper on the back of our breakfast menus. Nobody's misunderstanding anything. You're just dull, and you've decided that's the sea's fault."

He opened his mouth, closed it, and reached for the towels. The fog was rolling up the lane behind him, swallowing the church spire one stone at a time. I zipped my green jacket to the chin, took the spare key off its hook, and went back out into the weather. He still believes I misunderstood him. I've let him keep that, because it's the most useful thing he's ever given me.
