Dark ornamental tattoo on a calf

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A bare lower leg rests on a speckled terrazzo floor, showing a large dark ornamental design on the calf with bold solid black areas and fine radiating detail. Small lettering sits on the ankle above a white sock, and the wearer also has maroon and white trainers and green trousers in the frame. The image is a colour photograph, but the tattoo itself is entirely black ink with no colour.

The sun has not cleared the pines yet, and already you are late for the carving. Old Hesketh has left the workshop door propped with a boot, the way he always does when he expects you to swear at the cold. Inside, the bench is strewn with offcuts of oak and the smell of linseed. On the wall hangs the template he wants finished before the autumn fair: a round sunburst, twelve rays stepping out from a solid black boss, each ray split into fine threads like frost on a window.

You have spent three weeks on those rays. Hesketh says a sunburst is a lie unless every thread is cut by hand, and you believe him, because the door of the Reeve's house was carved by his father and still looks as if it is breathing. Beyond the workshop the forest runs right up to the last cottage, and at dusk the foxes come down to the water trough to drink like neighbours. You keep the chisel sharp and the lamp low, and you leave the black heavy where the wood is thickest so the light has somewhere to stop.

On the last evening, Hesketh takes the template down and studies it for a long time. Then he tells you the boss was never meant to be the sun. It was the hole the sun left behind when the first families walked out of the trees and decided to stay. He taps the centre with one thick finger. "Cut it deep," he says. "Nobody remembers the rays. They remember what was missing."

You cut it deep. In the morning the door goes up on the Reeve's porch, rays bright with oil, the black centre like a well at midnight. Hesketh sits on the step with his pipe and says nothing, which is how you know it is right. Behind you the trees stand very still, as though they too are waiting to be seen.
