Hamsa hand tattoos on both ankles

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two hamsa hand designs, each with a central eye, are tattooed on the ankles, with a partial second design visible on the right ankle. The linework is bold and the shading uses solid black and grey tones. The subject is photographed from above on a white bed, with the tattoos and black and white trainers as the focal points.

Dear Tomasz,

The parcel came back to me on Thursday with the Hull postmark crossed out in red, so I had to guess at where you had got to. I hope the rain off the Humber has not found its way into your bunk again. Enclosed is the brass hand Mama gave me the winter before she died. You will remember it hung over the back door in Brixton, the five fingers hammered thin and the eye stamped dead centre on the palm, polished smooth by everyone who ever reached for the latch.

I have kept it on the windowsill since the grocer on Coldharbour Lane pulled his shutters down for good. Mrs Adeyemi next door says the eye is only metal and I am a foolish old woman for talking to it. Perhaps. But the night the boiler went, the eye was the only thing in the kitchen still facing the door, and I took that as a sign to stop being stubborn and ring the man.

Send it back when you are settled, or keep it on the boat if the sea gets greedy. Mama always said the eye looks out for whoever holds the hand, not whoever sleeps under the roof. I am not sure I believe that, but I want you to have something that watches the weather for you.

Your loving sister, Ruth
