Small infinity symbol on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black infinity symbol is tattooed on the side of a finger, with the hand raised in a V shape against a plain off-white wall. The symbol is drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading, and it sits near the middle of the finger. The silver nail polish with glitter accents is in sharp focus, and the plain background keeps attention on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The road over Col Ferrant had been built twice, once by men with mules and once by men with diesel, and Marta Oyelaran had come to hate both sets of drawings. The survey sheet taped to her dashboard showed the hairpins stacked one above another like the loops of a dropped ribbon, and at the top, where the two lanes crossed on a bridge of raw concrete, someone long retired had pencilled a small figure of eight in the margin.

Her crew called it the knot. Every October the snow came over the col before the gritters were ready, and every October she sat in the cab with the wipers beating and tried to work out which loop she was on. Going up, the road curled left. Coming down, it curled right. Halfway round, you could look down and watch your own headlights climb the mountain you had already climbed.

On the last morning of the season, Tomas radioed from the lower bend to say the bridge was clear and the ice had gone to grey slush. She drove up slowly, watched the two lanes cross, and waited until her front wheels were back on the tarmac they had left. Then she stopped the truck on the bridge, switched off the engine, and walked out to the parapet where the council had once painted a white figure of eight in a year nobody remembered. The paint had flaked to a ghost. She traced it with one finger through the frost, and it was the first thing all season that seemed to have gone somewhere and come back.
