A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had worked the Hatchford flight for nineteen years and knew every coal barge that came through it by the sound of its engine. So when the Ruth Ambrey came up the locks at dusk with no lamp lit and no crew she recognised, she stood on the lock beam with her hands in her coat and waited.

The barge rode low and was sheeted with tarpaulin. When Nell lifted a corner with the boathook, she found no coal beneath it, only a stack of brass-cornered trunks, a bird carved from ash wood and a hurricane lamp that was still warm. A slip of paper was pinned to the bird's wing. It read only: the wharf at nine and three quarters, ask for the ring.

She had no idea what that meant. She did know the wharf, a rotten arm of stone off the old basin where no boat had tied up since the war. At its far end was an iron ring bolt set inside a triangle of rusted plate, the kind the village boys used to climb for dares. She walked out with the lamp in one hand and the boathook in the other and found the ring already threaded with a cord, knotted in three loops, with a pale grey feather tied through the knot.

She pulled. The wharf groaned and slid sideways on hidden rollers, and beneath it lay a dry stone stair running down into the dark. At the bottom a voice she did not recognise called up that the tide was on the turn and they were late. Nell tucked the feather into her collar and started down to find out who had been waiting for her.
