Deathly Hallows symbol temporary tattoo on a wrist
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The collage shows the steps of applying a temporary tattoo: a liquid is dabbed onto a cotton pad, the pad is pressed to the wrist, a transfer is laid on the skin, and the area is rinsed. The design is a triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical line, drawn in bold, even black outline with no shading. The colour is black on pale skin, with a plain wooden background and a close-up crop in one panel.

The sachet is the colour of old butter, and its foil has split along one corner, so the paste inside has dried to a crust. You found it wedged behind a panel in the cargo hold of the Halcyon Drift, where the salvage crew stopped listing things after the second hull breach. The pictograms on the back are what hold you: four frames stacked one above the other, like a comic nobody finished. A pad of cotton, a hand, a pressed sheet, a basin of water.

Mira, the archivist, says the old people did this to mark themselves for a day, a festival or a vow, and then let the water take it. She says it with the flat patience of someone who has read the same manifest six times. You don't believe her until you hold the transfer sheet up to the lamp and see the mark: a triangle, a circle inside it, and a single upright line dropping through the middle from the apex to the base. It is drawn in one even black with no shading, as if whoever made it trusted a line to be enough.
You try it on your own wrist. The sachet smells of vinegar and something sweeter underneath. You press the pad, count to thirty the way the pictogram shows, lay the sheet down and rub until the paper goes soft and grey. When you peel it away the triangle stays, a little blurred at the edges, looking up at you like a door left open on a corridor you have not yet walked down.
Mira is still in the doorway when you carry the basin out. You rinse the wrist under the thin cold stream, and the water runs grey, then clear, carrying the mark down the drain in a rush that sounds like someone sighing. She asks if it hurt. You say no. You are already folding the instructions into your pocket, because you want to know what else they thought was worth washing away.
