Deathly Hallows symbol with script on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical line through its centre, with the word always written in a flowing script beneath the triangle's base. The linework is a consistent black outline with no shading or fill, and the ink sits crisply on the skin. The design is centred on the inner wrist and photographed straight on against a plain grey background.

Dear Edie,

The frost came early up past the sawmill this year, and the beech wood has gone the colour of weak tea. I walked the old path at dusk yesterday, the one Father used to take to the cutting, and stopped where the trees thin out by the boundary stone. You will remember the stone: three marks cut into its face, a triangle with a ring inside it and a single upright line running through the ring. Under them he chiselled the word always, though he never would say to whom.
Something has changed. Someone has lifted the moss from the base and scraped the letters clean, so the word stands out pale on the grey. I have no idea who did it. Mrs Harrow says it was the boy from the charcoal burners, but he cannot write, so I doubt he did the lettering. I knelt there in the mud with my fingers in the cuts until my knuckles ached, and I thought of the night you left on the carrier's cart, how you refused to look back at the village because you said looking back was how people got stuck.
Then the strange part. When I stood up, the frost on the stone had melted in a neat ring around the top of it, and beneath the ring a fresh line of scratched ash, as though a finger had been drawn through the soot. I am not superstitious. But I have started leaving the lamp lit in the window again, and I walk the same path each dusk, and each time the line is a little longer.
Come home at midwinter if you can. Bring the chisel. I would like to know who else has been keeping count.
Your loving sister, Maud
