Beauty and the Beast scene on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Belle in a yellow gown dancing with the Beast in a blue coat, with the candelabra Lumiere, the clock Cogsworth, and the teapot Mrs Potts with her cup Chip gathered at the lower right. The rendering uses smooth, blended shading and bold colour with soft gradients across the figures and background. The design fills the thigh from hip to knee, with warm yellows and blues dominating the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The clock in the back of Ida Marsh's dressmaking shop had stopped at twenty to four, and nobody had ordered the yellow silk gown pinned to the dummy by the window. She finished it anyway one wet Sunday, while the kettle ticked on the range and her father's brass candlestick hissed in the draught from under the door. The candlestick had a crooked arm that would never stand straight on any table, and on bad nights Ida swore it was grumbling the way old men do over their pipes.

On the Thursday a tall man in a blue coat, buttoned one hole out, came in from the rain asking for a lining to be mended. Ida said she did not do coats. He said he only wanted her to look at the seam, where something had been sewn in years ago and never taken out. Under the satin she found a small brass key, warm from being held.

The key fitted the clock. When the doors swung open the clock struck four, then five, then went on striking for all the hours it had lost, and in the back room the teapot began to fuss, calling for its chipped cup to stop chattering about who had been first to notice. The candlestick laughed through its nose.

The man did not stay for tea. Before he left he asked Ida to dance with him in the shop, and she pinned up the hem of her own skirt and let him turn her between the dummy and the counter. When the gas went out at dusk, the clock said twenty to four, and the candlestick, for the first time in forty years, stood perfectly straight beside the door.
