Stacked cats on an ice cream cone forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Three cartoon cats sit stacked like ice cream scoops on a waffle cone, with a cherry on top at the crown of the design. Bold dark outlines define the cats, and soft shading and blush pink cheeks add detail. Pastel blues, pinks, oranges and purples fill the design, with scattered sprinkles, candies and a purple bow with a gold bell at the base.

The third cat was the one that caused the trouble. Nobody told me the mule would shy at her, and nobody warned me that snow from Mount Soracte melts faster than a bad promise once the sun clears the Flaminian gate. Uncle Lucius had packed the cart himself. Three cats, he said, because a proper snow-cone needs a proper stack, and cats keep the mice off the ice. He said it with a straight face, which is how I knew he was making it up.

By the time we reached the Aventine, the snow had gone soft at the edges and the honey had run down the wafer in slow gold ropes. The grey cat sat on top like a keeper of the cherry, ears flat against the drips. The ginger one clung to the middle with her paws tucked under her chest, and the tabby wedged herself at the bottom where the cone was thickest, purring at the bell on its purple ribbon as if she had ordered it herself. I kept waiting for one of them to slide off. None did.

The steward at the palace kitchen door took one look and said the cats were not on the order. Then the cook came out wiping her hands, took a spoon from the top scoop, and tasted it with her eyes closed. She said nothing for so long that my stomach turned over. Then she held out a bronze coin, and the tabby, who had decided by then that she belonged to the kitchen, leapt straight off the cone into her apron.

On the walk home the bell rang every time the wheel struck a stone, and I let it ring. The cook had paid me in honey and a coin with the emperor's face worn half away, and somewhere behind the bakehouse a tabby was already being fed bits of cherry from a wooden spoon.
